My Sous Chef

AKA "The Monster" AKA "Punk" AKA "Beans"
She is a bona fide machine of destruction with an Italian paci. If I am cooking during waking hours, she is there at my knees insisting for a seat on the counter.  Where she provides such services as stirring, flipping on/off switches, pinches of salt, and, of course, taste testing.
But you have to watch her, because she will take artistic license with your food.
Her real name is Charlie Mae.

  3. So glad you are back, busy, and everything is good.

Sous chef and not food critic? That's what my kids were at that age! Actually, they were more adventurous eaters at that age than they are now in their thirties. Picked up the "smell it first" rule from somewhere.

Have a four-year-old grandnephew interested in cooking and pored over websites to find tools he could use safely that would actually be of help in the kitchen. Decided against the mandoline but found something called Swiss Chop Chop. Turns out it has sharp exposed blades also even though they are in a cup when it is used.

Already has a salad spinner but got the manual egg beater, apple slicer/corer and some other things that slip my mind now. Melon baller needs a more coordination than he's got yet. Zester will probably come soon.

Some websites offer "a child's kitchen knife"; even though it comes with a glove I am very skittish. He's probably got 8-10 yrs before I'm comfortable with that idea.

Any other ideas of utensils/tools for introducing a kid to cooking tasks? He is one of those kids that can't be watched enough to guarantee he is working safely and wisely. Wouldn't put him in an active kitchen full of boiling pots and fryers. Needs close supervision for now. Still, tools that he can grow into using independently are what I am aiming for. Also, family is largely vegan/vegetarian so simple things like egg slicer just aren't on the list.

  5. It's moments like these that you have to cherish. Before you know it, they're all grown up and barely around.

  6. She's such a cutie! Your daughter seems to be showing great interest in cooking at an early age, maybe she'll follow your footsteps and become an excellent chef too.
